( Read Book ) ì Card Game ⚜ Usually it's other people's lives that are a mess But when successful divorce lawyer JB's best friend dies, he finds his own world in turmoil Suddenly, he must reexamine years of choicesand one big secret Card Game follows JB and his band of poker playing brothers from their first game in a 's suburban Maryland basement through their most memorable good and bad bets and wins and losses, as the men gather at a funeral to reflect on everything that they've faced together, and, even importantly, all that they have not Card Game brings to life an era of prank phone calls and fake IDs, unsupervised boys' nights out, and moments of headshaking depravity, even as it tells the story of what happens when these boys grow up A funny, poignant, and at times painful meditation on death, lifelong friendships, and honesty, Card Game is as irreverent as it is heartfelt This novel was written by a friend of mine so I was hoping that I would be able to call David up and say great job! I was pleasantly surprised David wove a good story together Based around the death of his best friend, Tom, a couple of years ago, the protagonist, JB, finds himself at Tom's funeral As the funeral progresses JB reflects back in time (over a period of 30 years)remembering funny and often hysterical vignettes involving JB, Tom and his Card Game buddies David is a good descriptive writer and I could easily imagine each scenario As a side note, this book will appeal to menthan women but I enjoyed the story and got some insight into how mens' friendships work (definitely not like womens'!)I would upgrade this novel's rating to 31/2 stars the story is solid as is the writing. This is a book about the friendship of young men and the development of that friendship through the years It is a very enjoyable read that includes some incites into the author's philosophy of life.
